Hike
Traveling on the Dempster is experiencing another reality, the reality of vast wilderness, and one can not really appreciate the Dempster, and all it has to offer, without venturing into its depths.
Using Bensen Creek Wilderness Adventure & Retreat as your base, there are day and half day hikes you can take to experience the striking scenic beauty of this land. Three of the most popular are the Grizzley Valley Ridge Viewpoint Hike, the Angelcomb Peak Viewpoint Hike and the Hart River Valley Hike. These hikes can also be self-guided.
Grizzly Valley Ridge Viewpoint Hike
Grizzly Valley Ridge Viewpoint Hike is the fastest and easiest route from the Dempster Highway to splendid views of the spectacular Mt. Monolith and the Tombstone Mountain Range.
The hike starts with a pleasant, refreshing walk through the forest between Cairnes and Grizzly Creek. Within one kilometre the land starts to rise and after another kilometre you will climb above the tree-line. Views of Mt. Monolith emerge slowly until a superb viewing point is reached about 4 km in.
With the entire Grizzly Valley and the Tombstone Mountain Range as your panorama, you can stop for a well deserved scrumptious picnic lunch provided by Bensen Creek.
The duration of the hike is approximately 5 hours including stops for lunch and breaks. Hikers should be in good physical condition for this is a very physically exerting hike.
Price: $175.00 for two people; $15.50 for each additional person.
Angelcomb Peak Viewpoint Hike
The slopes of Angelcomb Peak offer hiking for all ages. In summer, the slopes are blanketed with a wide variety of alpine flowers such as Ogilvie draba, violets, mountain heather and Lapland rosebay. The smells are heavenly. Upon reaching the peak, you will experience spectacular panoramic views north up the Blackstone Valley, south along the North Klondike and east into rarely traveled wilderness where one can often see Dall sheep. Here you can stop for a well deserved scrumptious picnic lunch provided by Bensen Creek.
The duration of the hike is approximately 8 hours including stops for lunch and breaks. Hikers should be in good physical condition for this is an average physically exerting hike.
